Self-Portrait

Tan turned his attention on himself only rarely. Three self-portraits survive in the record, painted in the early 1990s, one of them still in the artist's own collection. They are a quiet counterpoint to a career spent looking outward, at Penang, its people and its changing world: a few occasions on which the observer paused to face the glass.
