Recent work: the cubist turn

Tan's most recent series marks the furthest point yet on the road he named in 1999: from realism to abstraction. The new paintings are cubist in construction, faceted planes and interlocking forms, while keeping the atmospheric warmth he learned from the English landscape tradition of Constable and Turner. It is a late development, and a deliberate one: the observer of Penang's vanishing world turning to the modern language he has studied since the beginning. (Extend this page as the new works are photographed and catalogued; each new work enters the registry with year and dimensions like any other.)

Style tags are assigned conservatively. Further cubist works among the recent plates are held for review before they are surfaced here.
