Racing Against Time

Racing against time is Tan's horse race, and some of the most abstract work in the archive. Painted in 2005, the horses dissolve into swirling movement, the subject almost lost in the speed of its own making. It is a clear marker on the road he named in 1999, from realism towards abstraction, the point where close observation gives way to pure motion.
