A Fishing Village on Stilts
2002, oil on canvas
Series
The fishing village is where Tan's art is closest to documentary. Boats returning with the catch, stilt houses, nets, the labour of the sea. His 2005 curator read these works as portraits of poverty and fortitude, not scenery, and the reading holds: these are paintings of work, made from long observation of the Penang shoreline as it changed.
